A weekend in the heart of the Czech Republic: 5 tips for day trips around Radvanov

When you stay at Chateau Radvanov, you are perfectly placed. Hidden away in peaceful countryside, yet still close to some of the most interesting places where South and Central Bohemia meet, it is the kind of location that lets you truly switch off without feeling cut off. Whether you love history or simply want to recharge in nature, these five places deserve a spot on your list.

1. Šelmberk Castle Ruins

(5 minutes by car, or a lovely walk)

This one has a special place in our hearts. You can spot Šelmberk’s striking tower from a distance, and the whole site has an atmosphere that is hard to describe until you experience it for yourself. Climb the tower for beautiful views over the rolling hills around Mladá Vožice.

  • Local tip: The grounds also include a heritage craft centre and a herb garden. If you can, plan your visit for one of the historical festivals held here.

2. Chýnov Cave

(15 min by car)

Forget the standard stalactite cave. Chýnov Cave is famous for its unusual colours — shades of yellow, white and brown created by layers of marble and amphibolite. It was the first cave in the Czech Republic to be opened to the public, and the tour is memorable in every season. In summer, it is wonderfully cool.

3. Velký Blaník and the Legend of the Knights

(20 min by car)

Few legends are as deeply rooted in the Czech landscape as the story of the Knights of Blaník. Velký Blaník is only a short drive from Radvanov, and the walk up to the wooden lookout tower — built in the style of a Hussite watchtower — is pleasantly demanding rather than exhausting. The surrounding forest has a strange, almost mystical feel to it.

4. Mladá Vožice and the Solnice

(5 min by car)

Our nearest little town is well worth a short stroll. The baroque Church of St Martin on the square is beautiful, but the real highlight is the so-called Solnice — a historic building with a bell turret, all that remains of the town’s original fortifications. Wander through the side streets and take in the atmosphere of a small town where time seems to stand still.

5. Borotín Castle Ruins

(20 min by car)

If you love romantic scenery and memorable film locations, head to Borotín. The Czech fairy-tale film *Honza málem králem* was shot here, and it is easy to see why. The ruins are reflected in the surface of the pond, making this one of the most photogenic spots in the region. It is also perfect for a relaxed picnic.

After a day of exploring, you will return to Radvanov to a soft bed and the kind of silence that is hard to find elsewhere.
